Bob Meistrell Memorial Paddle Out Photos
Sunday morning over 1,000 swimmers, paddlers, divers, surfers, SUP’ers and kayakers took to the waters just south of the Redondo Beach Pier to say farewell to Bob Meistrell. They gathered around his 70-ft boat, Disappearance, for an emotional ceremony that included lowering his ashes into the ocean as everyone splashed water into the air. The Redondo Beach Harbor Patrol and Los Angeles County Lifeguards were also on hand and fired their water canons at that moment.
“Paddlers included Mike Purpus, the best pro surfer ever to have come out of the South Bay, Dogtown surfboard designer Jeff Ho, Allen Sarlo, surfing’s first world champion, Peter Townend,1976 World Chapmion and Ian Cairn’s of Australia and five time women’s world surfing champion Margo Godfrey Oberg,” the Easy Reader News reported.
“It was an awesome, fitting send off to a true waterman,” says son and CEO of Body Glove International, Robbie Meistrell.
